Next Level Organizer Series: Whole Home Organization

Part 2 of a 3-Part Series

Expanding into full home organizing and decorating projects can feel exciting… and a little overwhelming. This guide breaks everything down simply so you know exactly how to structure these projects, communicate with clients, and confidently offer higher-value services.

If you prefer to listen on the go, I’ve also covered this topic in a podcast episode. You can tune in here:

Step 1: Start with a Consultation + Walkthrough

Every full home project starts here- no expectations.

During your consultation:

  • Walk through the entire home

  • Identify the clients biggest stress points

  • Prioritize the most important areas first

  • Set clear, realistic expectations

Pro tip: Whole home projects always take multiple sessions. Set that expectation early.

Step 2: Create a Consistent Schedule (Momentum Matters)

Momentum is everything in large projects.

What works best:

  • 1-2 sessions per week

  • Consistent days (ex: every Monday or Thursday/Friday)

Avoid:

  • Large gaps between sessions

  • “We’ll schedule as we go” approaches

If a client wants their home done, explain that consistency is what gets them results faster.

Step 3: Work Room-by-Room with a Clear System

Don’t try to tackle everything at once.

Instead:

  • Move room-by-room

  • Declutter first, then organize

  • Use consistent bins, labels, and categories throughout the home

This creates:

  • A cohesive look

  • Easier maintenance

  • A smoother process for both you and your client

Step 4: Layer in Decorating (If Requested)

Some clients will want more than organizing- they want their home to feel finished.

Here’s how to approach it:

  • Declutter and organize first

  • Then plan the look and feel of the space

  • Choose colors, themes, and finishing touches

Some clients may want:

  • Simple styling

  • Coordinated products

  • Full room themes

Every project will look different- and that’s okay.

Step 5: Decide Your Role with Decorating

You get to choose how involved you want to be.

Option 1: You Do NOT Offer Decorating

You can say:

“I love that you’re excited about how the space will look. My specialty is creating systems that make your home functional and easy to maintain. While I make sure everything looks clean and cohesive, full decorating decisions like furniture or paint colors usually fall under an interior designer. I’m happy to recommend on if you’d like.”

Option 2: You DO Offer Decorating

You can say:

“That’s such a great idea. Once we finish decluttering and organizing, I can offer styling services to pull everything together- like coordinating bins, decor, and shelf styling. If you’d like to go further, we can also add a design package for shopping and larger pieces.”

Option 3: You Collaborate with a Designer

You can say:

“I love your vision. My role will be to create the systems and flow of your home. If you’d like a decorator’s touch, I can recommend someone so you get the best of both worlds.”

Step 6: Handle the Shopping Process

Shopping is often the most overwhelming part for you and the client.

Here are three simple way to structure it:

Option 1: You Handle Everything

“I’ll take measurements, create a product list, and shop within your budget. I’ll bring everything ready for install. My shopping time is billed at my hourly rate or flat fee.”

Option 2: Client Approves Items

“I’ll narrow it down to 2-3 options per space and send you links or photos. Once you approve, I’ll purchase everything.”

Option 3: Budget Conversation First

“Before I start shopping, let’s set a budget you’re comfortable with. I’ll select items within that range and keep everything organized, including receipts and returns.”

Step 7: Follow a Simple Project Flow

Keep your process clear and repeatable:

Consultation→ Decluttering→ Product Planning→ Install/Styling→ Walkthrough→ Maintenance

Many organizers find it easiest to complete this process one room at a time before moving on.

Step 8: Set Expectations Early

Full home projects can feel overwhelming for clients.

Your job is to:

  • Break it down into clear steps

  • Guide the process

  • Keep things moving

With strong communication and structure, clients feel supported and you stay in control of the project.
